The Diptych for Solo Trumpet was written in 2004. It is a meditation on some of the principal themes of the Festival. For some time I had had in mind to write a piece expressing ease of self-resolve; I thought solo trumpet would do this well, and planned to call the piece "A Certain Degree of Self-Determination." The ideas seemed to me to be more scenic than I had thought they would be, so I instead call the piece Diptych.

The work's two movements are variants of one another. The first is "Waters," a long, billowing legato line that is continuous... with exceptions. The second movement is "Bridges," in which numerous bridge-like melodic bursts are phrased across silences. The Diptych is eleven minutes long.
